How we shape Sustainability

At Lufthansa Aviation Training, we take responsibility—for people, the environment, and the values we uphold and promote. We support the goals and areas of action of the Lufthansa Group. Social standards are at the core of our decisions, and we are committed to ethical and transparent business practices. Our goal is to drive positive change through responsible actions and to shape the impact of our activities sustainably.

Acting in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In 2015, the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to contribute to the achievment of these goals, we have identified ten SDGs in alignment with the key aspects of the LAT, where we can reduce negative impacts or enhance positive impacts due to our business model.

In alignment with the SDGs, we have defined clear sustainability objectives in the areas of Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG). These objectives form the foundation for responsible and sustainable action across all areas of our company.

Environmental Responsibility

As a training provider, we are the first stop on the path to responsible aviation. As a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, we support the Group's climate goals of halving net CO₂ emissions by 2030 compared to 2019 and achieving CO₂ neutrality by 2050. From the very beginning of training and education, we raise awareness of this issue and are committed to sustainably minimizing our environmental impact.

 

          

Energy plays a central role for us in the field of environmental responsibility.
It is not only used as fuel for pilot training in the air but also powers over 70 predominantly electrically operated training devices on the ground. We are committed to taking responsibility for managing our energy consumption sustainably:

  • Implementation of an energy management system at LAT locations with high energy consumption, in line with the Energy Efficiency Act. This system helps us monitor our usage, improve efficiency, and continuously reduce energy consumption.
  • Regular monitoring and maintenance of simulators and training devices to ensure safety and optimized energy use.
  • Conversion of remaining hydraulic systems (used for motion) to electric systems wherever feasible and beneficial to reduce environmental impact.
  • Promotion of renewable energy sources, such as the installation of photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  • Raising awareness of energy-related topics across all areas of the company, for example, through Digital Clean-Up events and web-based training sessions.

 

           

 

 

      

Sustainability Meets Innovation
We view the adoption of advanced technologies as an opportunity to make our training programs more diverse, environmentally friendly, and socially sustainable.
The use of virtual reality and online modules already enables us to conduct training sessions independent of time and location. This approach helps reduce travel distances and promotes greater flexibility.

 

       

 

 

 

Efficient Use of Resources

  • We give aircraft parts a second life by repurposing retired components such as life vests, trolleys, and galley equipment for our training mock-ups. This approach saves valuable resources while creating realistic and practical training conditions.
  • We are increasingly designing our processes to be circular across all areas—for example, by using reusable packaging and practical refill options.

 

   

 

Social Responsibility

Our goal is to create inspiring and future-oriented workplaces as an employer, based on collaborative teamwork.

Through regular donation campaigns, such as Christmas star initiatives to fulfill the wishes of children from social organizations, we support, among others, Help Alliance, the Lufthansa Group's aid organization. In addition, we strengthen our employees' sense of community through team-building events, such as organized runs or clean-up days, thereby fostering a strong and engaged corporate culture.

In our business environment, we are committed to the highest standards and strict adherence to compliance requirements. Our company-wide Code of Conduct serves as a guide for responsible behavior for all stakeholders. To actively promote these standards, we rely on regular and mandatory compliance training to strengthen awareness of legal and ethical requirements. Additionally, our Ombudsman system provides a trusted point of contact for reporting violations or concerns.

 

       

 

 

 

Sustainability reporting is becoming increasingly important—not only to meet regulatory requirements but also because the interest of our stakeholders in this topic is growing. As a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, our data is incorporated into the Lufthansa Group's reporting. Starting from the 2024 financial year, this will be prepared in accordance with the requirements of the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The project creates transparency regarding the current status and future ambitions of the Lufthansa Group on ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) topics.

 

 

Effective risk management is an essential part of our corporate governance and helps us achieve our ESG goals. We aim to focus on ESG-related risks, such as climate change and the associated evolving market demands.
